About King of the Court

We don’t get a lot of NBA superstars coming through little ol’ Pine Hill, Texas. That’s why everyone is all in a tizzy over the fact that the USA men’s Olympic basketball team will be training here of all places before this year’s Summer Games. With little else to talk about, rumors about the players have been spreading like wildfire, and there’s one man in the middle of it all holding a match.

Ben Castillo.

NBA champion.

Olympic gold medalist.

Widely hailed ‘King of the Court’.

The morning he walks into my dingy diner, I have enough sense to keep my head down and go right on wiping tables, pouring coffee, and serving up short stacks. A man who looks like that—superstar or not—has only ever meant trouble, and more trouble is the last thing I need, what with taking care of Nan and scraping by on tips from truckers.

If anything, he seems drawn to my indifference. His steely gaze pierces me behind the counter. My knees nearly buckle under the weight of his attention. But while Mr. Pretty Boy is probably used to snagging city girls with a smile, this gal is country strong.

I won’t be some clichéd convenience for him on his way through town.

So look over your choices carefully, Benny-boy. We serve up sides of hash browns here, not heartbreak.

To Have and to Hate is R.S. Grey’s newest stand-alone romance, and this features a marriage of convenience, a trope I didn’t know I was craving right now.

Elizabeth Brighton is coerced into marrying a friend of the family in order to save her family’s fortune and well-being. She’s a wonderful character, loves art, painting and she’s bright, funny and charming. She’s independent and despite coming from a family of good fortune, Elizabeth is determined to make her own way as an artist and not rely on money from her parents.

Her new husband is Walter Jennis II, and Elizabeth is struck by his good looks, however he’s a grumpy, aloof workaholic. But let me tell you, Walt is a delight. He’s caring, thoughtful and ugh so dreamy.

The two of them do not mesh at the beginning of the marriage. But as the story continues, their relationship starts to build and it’s a beautiful slow burn, so hang in there and just enjoy the way Elizabeth annoys the hell of Walt at times. You will love them, you will love their relationship and you will be rooting for them. Their love takes time, but is so worth it.

R.S.Grey once again pulls you into her fictional world, where you are surrounded by fabulous characters, amazing story lines, quick witted, sizzling banter and tension between the characters that is just so tangible.

This was an incredible marriage-of-convenience/arranged marriage, fake-dating trope and I highly recommend it. I devoured this one, and I’m already contemplating re-reading it.

Review

This was pure R.S Grey gold! Amazing characters, great story, fantastic banter, and chemistry that was completely off the charts.

Date Me Like You Mean It is the latest stand-alone romantic comedy by R.S. Grey and it is brilliant. I was pulled right into this story and pretty much forgot everything around me (which, let’s be honest, we need right now!).

Maddie has had an intense crush on Aiden for years, and living together as roomies and best friends has done nothing to quench her feelings. She wants him, but is afraid of what will happen if she admits how she feels about Aiden.

Maddie gets a new, eccentric boss at her job, and one evening as she’s having dinner with Aiden, she runs into her boss and ends up telling them a tiny, white lie – that she and Aiden are dating and have been for a while. Aiden plays along and Maddie later makes him go on a bachelorette weekend with her, still playing a loving couple. This trip reveals that Maddie isn’t the only one with pent up feelings. Fate, however, had other plans and Aiden moves to New York and leaves Maddie back home in Austin.

She’s hurt, confused and refuses to respond to Aiden’s texts and calls. It’s not until a year has passed by that they see each other. Things aren’t the same anymore, and who knows what’ll happen (I know and arghh).

Let me tell you, the tension and emotions between these two! WOAH, I wanted to knock them on the head at times and just yell at them to TALK TO EACH OTHER. This is what R.S. Grey does so well, the whole built up is amazing and I was squeaking throughout the book with joy and happiness for these two characters. I absolutely adored their friendship, I loved the chemistry and that they’re not flawless. Maddie is dramatic and weird and their relationship is so freaking adorable.

Aiden is swoon-worthy, Maddie is quirky and hilarious, and if you’re a fan of  the unrequited love, friends-to-lovers, fake-boyfriend, enemies-to-lovers tropes then you need to get your hands on this one!

About Dare Me Like You Mean It:

I’m good at hiding my feelings.

Having to pretend I’m not in love with my best friend?

Pfft. That’s child’s play.

Here’s how I do it: I avert my eyes when he walks out of his room, shirtless in all his toned glory. I squash the butterflies that fill my stomach every time he slowly unfurls a dimpled smile. And, most importantly, I keep an arsenal of “personal massagers” in my bedside drawer. Wink.

Not to brag, but Aiden Smith isn’t hard to resist if you’ve been doing it for as long as I have. In fact, we might have continued as best friends forever if not for the fact that I needed him to play the part of my fake boyfriend.

Date me like you mean it, I told him. Nudge nudge. C’mon, just go along with a little lie, help a girl out, and then we can all return to life as we know it.

Except he veered from the plan.

He crossed the line.

Flirting with me when no one else was around? Pinning me down and kissing me like that? Okay, how exactly is taking off my bra part of the ruse, Aiden?!

I’d ask him about it if I could, but well…things got ugly and we’re not best friends anymore.

In fact, we’re the exact opposite.

Now, I have to play nice even though I want to crush his heart in the palm of my hand.

Pretending not to love Aiden was the easy part.

Pretending not to hate him?

Well…I might need a little more practice.

Review

When people ask me why I love R.S. Grey’s books, I’m just going to ask them to read The Trouble With Quarterbacks. This is R.S. Grey when she’s at her best: quick banter, steamy romance, and a fantastic set of characters.

The Trouble With Quarterbacks was such a funny, steamy, romantic and feel good book.

Candace Williams is, in her own words, “just some loon from across the pond”, and while I agree with that, I’ll also throw in my two cents and say that she’s such a fun, smart and quirky character. She’s hilarious, has some amazing comebacks and you will fall in love with her instantly.

Logan Matthews, NFL quarterback and just won the Super Bowl. He’s a wanted man and when he runs into Candace while picking up his nephew from the preschool where she teaches.

Candace has no clue who Logan is, she’s completely oblivious to American sports and Logan is intrigued. But, it’s a difficult world to be thrown into, what with rumours, papparazzi and having everyone wanting a piece of your life. These two though, they figure it out.

Candace and Logan have so much chemistry, you can practically feel it while you’re reading. They have so much hilarious back and forth and you root for them from the very beginning.

The story and plot is great, I sat with a smile on my face throughout the entire book and I squealed of joy several times too. I couldn’t put this one down.

It is a stand-alone romantic comedy and has a dual-point of view with a happy ending.

CANDACE: KAT & YASMINE! DO NOT DALLY! Come straight home after work. Kat, don’t take the long route from the subway station just so you can pass by Cute Hot Dog Guy. This is important!

I’ve had THE BEST DAY. You won’t believe it. There I was in my preschool classroom, washing a bit of poo out of some soggy trousers, when this absolute babe came to collect his nephew from my class.

Truthfully, I thought I’d blacked out for a moment when I first saw him. He was a proper hunk with glorious brown hair, quite tall, and he had these arms. Are muscly arms supposed to turn me on? I’m panting just thinking about them.

Anyway, he told me he’s a professional foosball player. At least, I think that’s what he said. The tots can get quite loud near pick-up time.

YASMINE: Foosball? What are you on about? Have you gone mad?

KAT: Oh sod off. So what if I like to have a good look at Hot Dog Guy’s arse on my trek home after a hard day’s work? It’s called self-care.

CANDACE: Kat, you’re hopeless. Yasmine, yes—foosball! I suppose it’s a big thing over here in the States? We must investigate and learn everything we can.

By the way, he’s called Logan.

Logan + Candace. I think that sounds quite nice! I can hear the wedding bells now. Dum dum da-dum.

YASMINE: Oh good grief. I suppose we can do some snooping when I get home. I’ll grab wine on my way.

KAT: I’ll grab hot dogs.

Another enjoyable read from R.S. Grey, albeit a bit different than what you may expect when you pick up one of her books.

Maren Mitchell will capture your heart from the start and you will find yourself rooting for her every step of the way. She’s making her own way the best she can, with no family to lean on and one day when the black hole she’s in seems to become significantly more difficult to get out of, she’s saved by a fairy godmother in the form of Cornelia Cromwell.

Soon Maren finds herself employed by Cornelia Cromwell and she ends up staying at Rosethorn, a gorgeous, Gilded Age mansion. Here, Cornelia Cromwell takes Maren under her wing and she becomes her companion/employee.

And then … Nicholas Hunt, lawyer and grandson to Cornelia and very protective of her. He immediately thinks that Maren is there to take advantage of his grandmother and her giant fortune.

This book was, as previously said, a bit differen than what you’ve come to expect from R.S. Grey. To me it lacked a bit, I missed the build up of the relationship between Nicholas and Maren, it felt too rushed for me and I didn’t feel the tension or emotions between them. Some of the story lines seemed a bit too quick and the characters were lacking to me. I also missed a bit more of the usual fun banter that’s in her books.

I enjoyed the book, the plot and like every other other R.S. Grey book, there was a stunning setting for her story. The Pride and Prejudice-ish mansion called Rosethorn, located in New Port. I’m not kidding, you almost expect Mr. Darcy to pop up at one of the garden picnics.

I just didn’t fall head over heels with this book, and I needed more interaction between the two characters for them and their relationship to seem convincing.

That being said, it was a great book of self-discovery, it was a book filled with friendship and reflection and I enjoyed that.

I’m excited to see what’s next from R.S. Grey.

R.S. Grey’s new standalone romance, Love the One You Hate is coming May 7th! Check out the gorgeous cover and find out more today!

About Love the One You Hate (Available May 7th)

Nicholas Hunt is the man I hate.

For good reason.

His opinion of me is tainted by prejudice even before my arrival at his grandmother’s estate, and my first impression of him is just as abysmal.

His arrogance and icy demeanor make it clear that he’s the type of man who’s best handled at a distance.

Fortunately, space shouldn’t be an issue inside this Gilded Age mansion and its lush gardens. If I stick with the servants and he keeps to his sailboat and vintage Porsche, we should hardly cross paths at all. Unfortunately, at Rosethorn, I find that all roads eventually lead to Nicholas Hunt.

Sparks fly as we spar at the dinner table. Fighting words are flung in the shadows of the palatial halls.

We hang suspended in our hatred of one another, painfully oblivious to the heat and tension that build with every moment we’re left alone. We’re liable to kill one another, I think…right up until my eyes land on his lips and a new feeling grips hold of me: lust.

What’s worse?

He knows it.

They say you should keep your enemies close, but when Nicholas tightens his grip on my waist and draws me near, I’m not sure if it’s out of loathing or love.

One thing’s for sure—I intend to find out.

Congratulation to R.S. Grey, another fantastic book, I’m not sure how you do you it, but please don’t stop!

This book was just what I needed to get out of my reading slump. It was everything I need and more.

Dr. Natalie Martin is a young, brilliant attending, who just finished her recidency and is starting her fellowship at the hospital in the BICU. Natalie lives with her brother Noah. She’s independent, smart, a tad bit neurotic and never want to depend on anyone, especially not a man. Despite this, she’s always harbored a serious crush on her brother’s best friend, Connor.

Dr. Connor Easton, plastic surgeon for burn victims, all around brilliant supervisor and mentor, oh and drop dead gorgeous, needs a place to stay while his house is being renovated. When Noah, Natalie’s brother, decides to take a leave of absence from the hospital and offers Connor to stay in the house with Natalie so he can keep an eye on her.

What Noah and Natalie don’t know is that Connor has also had a major crush on Natalie for several years.

Sparks start to fly and their chemistry is absolutely sizzling. The passion they have for their jobs and for each other make for a brilliant story that is well researched and filled with detailed descriptions of what it’s like to work at a hospital.

Connor and Natalie have the clever, witty banter and the palpable sexual tension that have become synonymous with R.S. Grey’s writing, they’re wonderfully written and the two characters, along with the rest of the crew, are sure to keep you entertained. The couple go through their fair share of struggles, but my goodness, when they figure everything out, it’s absolute bliss.

If you’re in the mood for a Doctor/brother’s best friend romance, be sure to pick this one up. You’ll love it and I hope that Noah and Lindsey will get a book, because whew those two had chemistry.

Thanks to the author for generously providing me an ARC to review.
